Abstract

The main objective of this study is to develop the creation of digital 3D models for the documentation of Cultural Heritage, being able to use these, in addition, to elaborate virtual restoration proposals that value aspects such as the execution technique, the artistic value of the work and the dissemination of Heritage in the social environment in which they are located.
The advance of new digital technologies, added to their accessibility, makes it necessary to explore the possibilities of these new ways of capturing and displaying Heritage. The current possibility of storing a large amount of information in a single digital document file opens up a range of options that begin with the virtual manipulation of the work, being able to carry out visualization, control, measurement and reintegration operations without having to act on the real object. .
The partial reconstruction of the wall paintings of the central apse of the church of the Royal Monastery of Villanueva de Sijena is proposed using a 3D model obtained by a digital scanning system called photogrammetry. The paintings are currently in the study phase by the Higher School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Assets of Aragon, in collaboration with the Government of Aragon. These are in a poor state of conservation due to the degradation of the binders and the action of the high temperatures caused by the fire that took place in 1936. Additional information is available that provides sufficient knowledge to assess the virtual reconstruction proposal of the original polychrome such as: pigment analysis, colorimetric analysis and photographs prior to the fire of 1936. With these data we want to offer an image of the advantage of the imaginative use of digital programs and utilities for analytical study and technical examination of the remains of mural painting that are still preserved in the apse of the church of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Sijena.
